Outside My Window

Autumn Views from Central Connecticut: 2006 Archive

By Kim Knox Beckius, About.com

On what dates will the fall leaves be at their best? It's the question on everybody's mind as autumn arrives each year in New England. For a sense of how the leaves changed week to week in 2006, click on these links for images of the view outside my window in Central Connecticut.

It's getting dark mighty early now, and in this final look at the view outside my window, you can see that the trees are mostly bare. If you missed seeing New England's fall foliage for yourself this year, be sure to plan ahead for a 2007 New England fall foliage trip. Happy Halloween!

Mother Nature giveth, and she taketh away. I watched in horror last Friday as a violent windstorm ripped fragile leaves off the trees in my backyard, just as they were nearing peak color. It looked a bit like golden confetti being shot from a cannon. The funny thing is, as I drive around in central Connecticut, I still see dense patches of vivid and beautiful foliage and even some completely green trees that may provide an autumn encore. So even though the trees in my view are mostly bare, I'm not yet ready to declare the season over.

My husband did some raking over the weekend, but as you'll see in this week's picture, the trees in my backyard continue to hold a high percentage of their leaves, even though we've had some rainy days here in Connecticut. The golds and oranges of autumn are vibrant, even on a gray day, and when the sun comes out again later this week, the colors are really going to be dazzling.

What a difference a week makes. The fall colors are really starting to pop here in central Connecticut, and although we've had a few Indian Summer days, it will definitely feel--and look--like fall in most of New England this weekend. Hurry here so you won't miss the show!

I love this early stage of autumn when my whole world has a golden tinge, and just a few show-off trees have burst into vibrant shades of orange and red. We're having a bit of an Indian summer this week. It's a gorgeous time to see and appreciate the first colors of fall in Connecticut.

I drove to New York State and back yesterday and saw plenty of touches of fall color, but nothing approaching full-blown peak foliage yet. Here in Connecticut, a hint of orange has popped into my view.

I'm just back in Connecticut after a week on the road in Maine, and one of the first things I wanted to do was check for color in my view. If you look carefully at the center of this photo, you'll see that there is just a hint of yellow. Up north, there was more early color than I anticipated, so I still think peak foliage will arrive sooner than it has in the past few years.

I always enjoy sharing the view outside my window as autumn decorates New England, and as you will see from this first image from the 2006 fall foliage season, my view is still very green. I took this photo just before leaving Connecticut for northwestern Maine. On the drive, we saw early signs of color along the Mass Pike, and in Maine, it was clear that this year's foliage show is underway. The region's forestry experts have been predicting that the color change will come early and be particularly spectacular this year. So far, I'm seeing evidence to support their forecasts. Perhaps we'll even see hints of color in next week's photo of the view from my window.
