Outside My Window

Check Fall Foliage Conditions with these Autumn Views from Central Connecticut

By Kim Knox Beckius, About.com

Oct 8 2008
Do you wish you lived in New England and could watch the leaves turn from vibrant summer green to subtle flecks of gold to full-blown red and orange? Are you planning your own fall foliage visit to New England this autumn and finding yourself longing for a preview of what you'll see?

You're in Luck!

Each week or so, I'll post a new photo of the view from my window, giving you a timely and authentic look at the progression of the fall foliage season and an update on current foliage conditions. And each photo will be archived here, so autumn's changing hues will be just a click away as the season progresses. Make a cup of hot tea or cider, and wherever you are in the world, sit back for a moment and glance through a New England window at the glory of the annual onset of fall. Enjoy!

I'm not sure if we actually got frost last night, but there was certainly the threat, and we fired up our wood pellet stove for the first time. Although daytime temperatures remain mild, cold overnight snaps are certainly accelerating the pace of fall foliage color change in Connecticut this year. As you can see in this view outside my window, there's still a solid green canopy, but the leaves have thinned a bit, and the coppers and golds the trees to the rear of my yard are sporting are more pronounced. Leaf peepers headed this way for the Columbus Day holiday weekend should be in for a good show.

It's still early in the season, but the colors of autumn are coming on strong here in central Connecticut. There are new splashes of red in my view this week, and on a trip to southeastern Connecticut last weekend, I saw richer fall color than I anticipated with the calendar still displaying September. Weekend rains sent a few leaves tumbling to the ground, but most trees still sport full crowns. It's going to be a spectacular weekend to be in the Northeast, with forecasts calling for bright, sunny days and cold nights.

A faint touch of tangerine has emerged in the view outside my window this week. Our weather has started to cool at night, but days are still sunny and bright. These are optimal conditions that usually result in brilliant fall colors. While the landscape here in Connecticut is still predominantly green, a few trees are definitely showing us a preview of what's "coming soon."

I'm thrilled to be sharing the view outside my window for the tenth year as New England's annual parade of autumn colors steps off. I've received many emails over the past decade from students, displaced New Englanders and other fall foliage fanatics who eagerly anticipate each week's new image. As you will see from this first photo from the 2008 fall foliage season, my view is still primarily green, although there are definitely a few golden touches in my view. A few trees here in Connecticut are showing off their colors early, but most won't start to change in earnest for several weeks still. Hurricane Hanna sent a few leaves flying to the ground earlier this month, but trees still look lush and healthy, and I'm predicting that we're in for a spectacular foliage season.
