Fall officially starts with the autumnal equinox in September (September 23 in 2007). Start marking your calendar with all of the great New England autumn events that you don't want to miss. Here's a look at fall festivals, football and fun in New England.

Fall Festivals

*** Featured Fall Festival*** Keene Pumpkin Festival

The fall harvest and Halloween will be celebrated throughout New England this fall, but nowhere, perhaps, more spectacularly than at the annual Keene Pumpkin Festival October 20, 2007. A quick look at the history of previous festivals tells it all--from 1991's first festival, which featured 600 jack-'o-lanterns, to 2000's record-breaking 23,727 glowing gourds and 2003's Guinness World Record 28,952 illuminated pumpkins--the Keene, New Hampshire, event has developed a loyal and enthusiastic following. Even though the Keene Pumpkin Festival broke an attendance record last year, the people of New Hampshire surrendered their Guiness World Record for the most lit jack-o-lanterns in one place to Boston. Will 2007 be the year the festival sets a new world record and Keene regains its status as pumpkin capital of New England? You'll just have to head to the Keene Pumpkin Festival to see for yourself. The Keene Sentinel's Pumpkin Festival Web site has all of the information you need on lodging, directions and parking, plus the critical details of how to register your own carved pumpkin!

Football and Other Sporting Events

*** Featured Sporting Event:*** Boston College Football

While tickets to see New England's NFL team, the Patriots, are scarce, football lovers visiting New England this fall need not despair! All of the excitement and thrill of going to the game can be experienced when you cheer on Boston College. Upcoming match-ups on BC's home schedule include September 1 vs. Wake Forest, September 8 vs. North Carolina State, September 22 vs. Army, September 29 vs. Massachusetts, October 6 vs. Bowling Green, November 3 vs. Florida State and November 24 vs. Miami. Home games are played at Alumni Stadium, capacity 44,500, on the Boston College campus. Call the ticket office at 617-552-GoBC to check ticket availability.

More New England Fall Fun

*** Featured Fun Event:*** Legend Weekend in Sleepy Hollow

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, complete with the Headless Horseman himself, is still alive and well! New England's neighbor, New York, boasts some of the nation's oldest legends and spooks, and Washington Irving's tale of Ichabod Crane and his headless pursuer is one of the classics. Historic Hudson Valley, which operates Irving's Sunnyside and Philipsburg Manor in Westchester County, will keep you and your family entertained during Legend Weekend, October 26-28, 2007. Events include candlelight tours, bonfires, storytelling, games and shows for children and appearances by the mysterious rider! Call 914-631-8200, ext. 618 for ticket information.
